Rare. 'The author, an English officer based at Kabul, obtained leave to accompany his friend, Lieutenant Sturt, on a mission to survey and map the mountain passes of the Hindu Kush in the summer of 1840' (Ghani). Notable for being one of the first European accounts of the Hindu Kush and as an example of how officers spent their leave whilst on duty in the First Afghan War.

From the library of William Dunville (1812-1874), the second Chairman of the Belfast firm of Dunville & Co., renowned for its VR whiskey.

First edition; 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); folding lithographed frontispiece, 3 lithographed plates, large folding map of the region around Cabul (small tear to hinge repaired), armorial bookplate to pastedown, contemporary gift inscription to preserved endpaper, caption of last plate a little trimmed; contemporary red polished half calf, green cloth boards, spine in five gilt and blind decorated compartment with gilt lettering piece, all edges marbled, a very good copy; 238 pp.
