First editions, the first volume signed and dated (1948) by the author on the second, upper flyleaf; 5 volumes in 6, 8vo; illustrated throughout with portraits, maps and plans, some folding, mild age toning to paper, more so to some endpapers; publisher's navy blue cloth, blind printed panels to upper boards, gilt lettering to spine, corners and spine ends rubbed and bumped, commensurate with age, spines dulled, three small stains to upper cover of vol. I, ownership erasure to upper paste-down of vol. II, small stain to rear cover of vol. IV, contemproary ownershiop name to upper flyleaf, mild staining and soling to covers of vol. VI but in the main a very good set and internally clean and bright; presented in a custom-made slip-case.
