A signed, first edition copy of this memoir by Clinton T. Duffy (1898-1982), Warden of San Quentin State Prison in California, and a prominent opponent of capital punishment. Amongst his other reforms, Duffy eliminated dungeons and physical punishment, established a hobby-shop programme and prison newspaper, broadened educational facilities and job training, and introduced the first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter to any prison.

First edition, first impression; signed by the authors; 8vo (21.5 x 14.5 cm); signed in pen in blue and black ink to front free endpaper recto, old bookseller's stamp to rear pastedown; publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, original photographic dustjacket, price-clipped, a few small closed tears to edges, very good; 253, [1]pp.
