with rare supplementary volume
This was the first major attempt to explore the Karakoram. The six-man expedition ascended the Hispar Glacier, and the Biafo and the Baltoro and achieved a height record. A remarkable achievement. Unfortunately most of the photographic plates which were to be used to illustrate the book were lost. This volume is also particularly significant for Conway's narrative of the expedition's sighting of K2 and reference to the mountain by its Indian Atlas letter and number code. This code was subsequently adopted as the standard name for the world's second highest mountain. The supplement volume of maps and scientific reports is scarce.
First edition.2 volumes ( including the rare second supplementary volume). 8vo. xxviii, 709; viii, 127 pp., 300 illustrations, folding map of Kashmir, portrait frontispiece and 2 large folding maps in pockets in second volume, original brown pictorial cloth, a fine set.
