Rothschild copy.. Conway, already knighted for his mountaineering achievements, was the first man to cross Spitsbergen in 1896 and his experiments with ski on that occasion placed him among the pioneers of British Skiing.

Israel Gollancz was a family friend of the Rothschilds, and one can imagine him thinking that this tale of adventure was a perfect present for the teenage Lionel.

First edition. 8vo,. xii, 371 pp., title-page in red and black, colour frontispiece, 7 colour plates, circa 100 full-page and text illustrations, 2 folding coloured maps, original cream cloth-backed brown cloth boards gilt, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, others uncut, light soiling and a couple of creases to spine, a very good clean copy.

Provenance: Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1882-1942), bookplate and inscription to him from Israel Gollancz dated 1898.
