'There is great sincerity and simplicity in the writings which record the teaching of Epictetus... His morality is lofty and unworldly; in a situation in which a man's main duty is to resist tyrannical power, it would be difficult to find anything more helpful... and in teaching the equality of slaves, it is superior to anything to be found in Plato or Aristotle or any philosopher whose thought is inspired by the City State' (Bertrand Russell).
Epictetus (AD c.50-135) is known to us primarily through the lecture notes of his pupil Arrian. Born into slavery, he obtained his freedom following the death of Emperor Nero and taught in Rome until about AD 93, when all philosophers were banished from the city. His practical teachings on ethics greatly influenced the future emperor Marcus Aurelius, who drew upon the philosopher in his Meditations.
