The Geneva Bible. A very good, complete copy of an early folio edition of the Geneva Bible; one of the very first to be printed in England.

The Geneva Bible was the first Bible to use chapters and numbered verses and became the most popular version of its time because of its extensive marginal notes. These notes, written by leaders of the Reformation including John Calvin, were intended to help explain and interpret the Scriptures for the average reader. It contains a variety of scriptural study guides and aids, including cross-reference verse citations, introductions to each book of the Bible, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations, and indexes.

2 works in one vol., folio (27.8 x 19.5 cm); woodcut devices to titles of The Bible, some restoration to inner margin of general title, woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials, numerous woodcut illustrations in text, double-page woodcut plan depicting the temple at Jerusalem, double-page woodcut map of the Holy Land; tit1075le of Psalmes within architectural woodcut border, musical notation in text; text in double-column, rubricated throughout, occasional closed tears to lower margin, scattered light foxing and soiling, 17th-century ink family notes to endpapers; near-contemporary full black morocco gilt, fillet and roll borders, central device with ornamental thistles, spine with 5 raised bands, compartments ruled in gilt, neatly rebacked, retaining original backstrip, some light rubbing, all edges gilt; [6], 366, 84, [2], 115, [11]; [7], 35, 35-92, [2]pp.
