The most infamous of all lists of forbidden books, the Index Librorum Prohibitorum emerged under Pope Pius IV in 1559 to curtail the ownership and dissemination of works which opposed the Catholic orthodoxy. It remained active until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council which took effect in 1966.

Many familiar authors maybe found within from Machiavelli to Luther and Calvin, Spinoza, the English philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, Hume, Bentham, and more.

8vo (21 x 14 cm); text in Latin, engraved frontispiece, printer's device to title-page, library stamp to half-title, blind-stamp to title, some marginalia in red crayon, slightly toned; contemporary sheepskin-backed marbled paper boards, paper ex-libris label to upper-cover, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, slightly faded, extremities a little rubbed with minor loss, very good; [4], xlviii, 422pp.
