An attractive two-volume set of Milton's (1608-1674) collected poetry arranged chronologically from his juvenilia to his last published dramatic work Samson Agonistes, which first appeared alongside Paradise Regain'd in 1671. The second volume is given over to Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, 'one of the greatest works of human imagination' retelling in blank-verse the story of the Fall of Man (ODNB). With an extensive bibliographic preface to each vol. by the editor Sir Herbert Gierson, the Scottish literary critic and Fellow of the British Academy.
