First edition of one of Osborne's few historical plays, set within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The play garnered some undeserved notoriety at the time for its theme of homosexuality: 'Never before have such explicit details of the conversation and attitudes of homosexuals been seen on the English stage' (Evening Standard).

First edition, first impression; 8vo; unmarked internally; publisher's red cloth, gilt lettering to spine, with the unclipped pictorial dust-jacket, some rubbing to extremities, else very good.
