Dublin, Trinity College, 1977
In 1967 the First International James Joyce Symposium was held in Dublin by the three founding members: Thomas F. Staley of the University of Tulsa, the editor of the James Joyce Quarterly, Fritz Senn, one of the editors of the Wake Newslitter, and Bernard Benstock, professor of English at the University of Miami. They were aided by two other organisers: Patrick J. Long of the Eastern Regional Tourism Organisation, and Maurice Harmon of the Department of English at UCD. The organisers had hoped to attract perhaps three dozen or so Joyceans; there were in fact over seventy-five paid registrants, representing fourteen or so countries of Europe and North America. By 1977 the Symposium had found its feet with a healthy average attendance of around 200 keen Joyceans, and produced dozens of academic papers on Joyce alongside other less formal academic productions.
Fritz Senn was elected president in 1977, replacing Thomas F. Staley who had been the incumbent since it's inception. As such it is not too fanciful to imagine this, invitation number 2, as his card.
First edition; 8vo (18 x 11.5 cm); Single folded sheet pamphlet containing card invitation loose as issued, the invitation is stamped with the number 2 on the verso, a touch of spotting, a very good copy.
