Inscribed presentation copy . A richly illustrated work from the 'father of Russian archaeology' and prominent art historian Nikodim Kondakov. A professor at St Petersburg University, Kondakov created a new field of art studies: the history of Byzantine art. His knowledge and understanding stemmed from his own archaeological expeditions to Athos, Macedonia as well as Syria and Palestine. Despite the far-reaching impact of his research, this edition is notably scarce, with no copies appearing on the market in the past fifty years.
Inscribed to the official photographer of the Moscow Archeological Society, Ivan Alexandrov, who also worked for the Russian Iconography Committee. The inscription reads 'Ivanu Nikolaevichu Alexandrov | v znak uvazhenie | ot avtora' [To Ivan Nikolaevich Alexandrov | as a token of respect | from the author].
First edition, 4to (30 x 21 cm); inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper to Ivan Nikolaevich Aleksandrov from the author, [2], ii, 308pp., 78 illustrations in the text, 72 plates with tissue guards, original cloth backed printed boards, corners bumped, boards slightly worn otherwise a very good example of a rare work.
