'In May 1946 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland received an overture from the Presbytery of Stirling and Dunblane recommending that a translation of the Bible be made in the language of the present day. As a result of this, delegates of the Church of England, Church of Scotland, and the Methodist, Baptist, and Congregationalist Churches met in conference in the following October at the Central Hall, Westminster. They recommended that the work be undertaken, and that a completely new translation be made, rather than a revision' (Herbert). The new translation of the Old Testament (with Apocrypha) was first published in 1970.
