New Zelaland c.1880
In the mid to late nineteenth century pteridomania or fern fever ( collecting and cultivating ferns) swept across certain parts of the world and quickly spread to New Zealand which has over 200 species of ferns. This album is an excellent example with the pressed indigenous ferns all still remarkably intact. Unusual to see such large ferns still intact.
Landscape folio (32 x 46 cm). 24 leaves of dried specimens of ferns all pressed and mounted on card, all gilt edged, all with ink captions and notes, numbered in pencil , all protected with green tissue paper, internally very clean, slight marginal spotting in margins of one or two leaves, silk endpapers; rebacked in nineteenth century full calf, gilt lettered and decorated, some rubbing to the upper cover; overall a very good copy.
