Pamphlet defending the position of the East-India Company in India whilst advocating for the removal of its China monopolies. The prevailing sense at the time was that disturbing the precarious and complicated system of control in India would lead to disaster: in the end the events of 1858 would prove this belief false.
William Smith O'Brien (1803-1864) was at the time a young Irish MP in his father's seat and a Tory. He would later become a leader of Irish Independence following the Great Famine.
First edition; 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm); modern quarter red morocco, gilt rolled red cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt, all edges speckled red, a fine copy; 75 pp.
