Presentation copy of the author's first book. First edition of the author's first book, self-published after numerous rejections from commercial publishers. Although 3,000 copies were printed, only 800 were sold. However, following the highly successful eponymous film adaptation in 1991, directed by Alan Parker, it attracted a cult status in telling the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young music fanatic who assembles a group of working-class youths to form a soul band named 'The Commitments'.
With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half-title, 'To Ferdia, Roddy Doyle. 12/1/91.' The recipient was the Irish author Ferdia Mac Anna.
