Garden City, New York, Doubleday & Company, 1946
Tipped in on facing inner flyleaves are the signatures of four notable Macbeth portrayers: Charlton Heston (1923-2008), who portrayed Macbeth in Burgess Meredith's ill-fated 1953 stage production in Bermuda (signature on heavy card); Laurence Olivier (1907-1989), who starred in a 1955 production considered among the very best (signed photograph); Ian McKellen (b. 1939), who starred in a 1976 stage production (signed photograph); Antony Sher (1949-2021), who starred in a 1999 stage production (signature on heavy card and dated 26 December 1982). Laid in are McKellen and Sher's original transmittal envelopes.
A unique assemblage, and a superb copy of this scarce edition.
First edition thus; large 8vo; 12 full-page plates by Salvador Dali, four signatures of notable Macbeth stage stars tipped in on facing inner flyleaves, p95 slightly marked, else unmarked internally; publisher's decorative paper over boards, pale grey topstain, minor rubbing to spine ends, else fine; housed in original black slipcase, pictorial title label to side panel, some edges discreetly archivally strengthened, but a complete and attractive example.
