London, printed for Edward Orme, 1810
Bobbin, whose real name was John Collier (1708-1786), fashioned himself as the Lancashire Hogarth, and was both celebrated in his day for his illustrations and his writings. This particular work has a broadness of theme which allows Collier to depict in his caricatures the panoply of everyday English society, exploring numerous topics such as love, anger, avarice, and penitence. Dentistry, or the torture of tooth pulling, is the subject of a number of the plates, as is intemperate drinking.
4to; engraved portrait frontispiece, hand-coloured dedication, 25 hand-coloured plates, faint soiling to leaves; contemporary green russia gilt, gilt lettering to spine, spine slightly split, corners a little rubbed, all edges gilt, brown endpapers; overall a good copy of a scarce work.
