New York, G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1897

An amazing set of the Tacoma Edition of this Oregon Trail classic by Washington Irving, originally published in 1836. The stunning cover design by artist & author Margaret Armstrong incorporates gilt titles within a pointillé oval from which feathers and arrowheads radiate alternately. The edition was produced in two bindings, this white version with burnt umber & gold decorations which is the scarcer and more sought-after, and a red cloth solely decorated in gilt. Very rare in such bright, untarnished condition.

'Tacoma Edition'; 2 vols, large 8vo (225 x 155 mm.); decorative titles and borders by Margaret Armstrong, frontispieces, 28 plates with captioned tissue guards, mild toning to endpapers; publisher's signed white cloth with elaborate Amerindian motifs in burnt umber and gold within pointillé and single-rule borders and rules, t.e.g., an exceptional set.
