Rome is the second of William Klein's four city books. After seeing the first, Life Is Good & Good For You In New York Trance Witness Revels (1956), filmmaker Federico Fellini invited the American photographer to Rome to work as assistant director on The Nights of Cabiria (1957). Shooting on the film was delayed, and Klein occupied himself by photographing the city and people of Rome. He later assembled this book from the photographs for Editions du Seuil, who had published his New York book three years earlier.
First edition; 4to (275 x 217 mm, 10¾ x 8½ in); black-and-white photographs printed in gravure, photographs, notes, and design by William Klein, light toning top edges; black cloth-covered boards, titles stamped on spine in white, leaning slightly, minor marking towards bottom edge, illustrated dust-jacket, wear to extremities, several short tears some strengthened with tape on verso, damp-staining to verso of rear panel, laminate lifting along edges of spine-folds; a very good copy; 189, [3]pp.
