The second edition, substantially revised with the addition of Richard Bentley's (1662-1742) Dissertation upon the Epistles of Phalaris, Themistocles, Socrates, Euripides, which is printed here for he first time.
The 'Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns' originated as a debate within the Académie Française in the last decades of the seventeenth century. Wotton's (1666-1727) contribution is a reasoned analysis of the respective merits of both, from literature to mathematics, anatomy, philosophy, botany, agriculture, music, theology and more. It is important as an early account of the growth of human knowledge and ideas, and their reception in the early modern age.
From the North Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with their bookplate to the front pastedown and blindstamp to the title-page and preliminary leaves.
Second edition, 'with large additions'; 8vo (19.5 x 12 cm); second works with divisional title-page, bookplate to front pastedown, related blindstamp to title and A2, pencil shelfmark to front free endpaper recto, manuscript correction of errata, a little toned towards rear; contemporary blind-panelled mottle calf, paper library labels to spine, upper joint split at spine head, slightly rubbed, very good; [8], xxxvii, [3], 421, [3], 152pp.
