from the Earl of Macclesfield's library
The second edition, substantially revised with the addition of Richard Bentley's (1662-1742) Dissertation upon the Epistles of Phalaris, Themistocles, Socrates, Euripides, which is printed here for he first time. The 'Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns' originated as a debate within the Académie Française in the last decades of the seventeenth century. Wotton's (1666-1727) contribution is a reasoned analysis of the respective merits of both, from literature to mathematics, anatomy, philosophy, botany, agriculture, music, theology and more. It is important as an early account of the growth of human knowledge and ideas, and their reception in the early modern age.
