Of humble Scottish origins, the Mill family produced two incredible minds who shaped the development of liberal thought across the nineteenth century. James, the father, a close associate of the Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham and economist David Ricardo, and his son John Stuart, an early advocate of universal suffrage and women’s rights, and worthy successor to Adam Smith.
