American poet James Merrill (1926-1995) was recognised as one of the a leading poets of his generation. Merrill is best known for his deeply personal and autobiographical approach, creating polished lyrical poetry in his early career and epic narratives in his later career. A highly decorated writer, Merrill received the National Book Award for Mirabell (1978), the National Book Critics Circle Award for The Changing Light at Sandover (1982), the Pulitzer Prize for Divine Comedies (1976), and many others.
