Charles Bell entered Lhasa in 1920 as the first European diplomat. The book gives a history of Tibet from the fifteenth century, its land and peoples, with particular emphasis on the period 1908-1924, when Bell was Political Officer for Sikkim, Bhutan, and Tibet.
