London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1940
Ethel "Bip" Pares (27 February 1904 – January 1977) was an Art Deco illustrator and well known for designing London Transport Posters and detective novel jackets. She also designed jackets for Eric Shipton's mountaineering books. Her work is now very collectible. This unusual book tells the story of her honeymoon trekking through the Himalayas with Tilman's 1938 Everest Expedition. It is filled with her own blue-tinted attractive sketches.
This copy is signed by Charles Warren, the doctor on both Hugh Ruttledge's and Harold Tilman's Everest expeditions. The other signatory, Peter Lloyd, was president of the Alpine Club and member of Tilman's Everest Expedition.
First edition. 8vo ( 23 x 16 cm). 301pp, 24 illustrations including frontispiece, some in colour, 2 maps, 60 drawings in text, signature of Charles Warren on half title, signature of Peter Lloyd tipped on half title, pictorial endpapers; publisher's grey cloth, lettered and decorated in silver, slightly worn at bottom of spine; original dust-wrapper, frayed at edges, slightly torn along top rear edge; otherwise a very good copy.
