A lovely fresh example of this scarce chromolithrographed map of the business district of Singapore from Empire Dock and St. Theresa Church to Balestier Hospital and Kwong Wai Sui Hospital.

Numerous small landmarks are labelled and noted, from the wealthy residences around Mount Victoria and Goodwood Hill to public parks, hospitals, cinemas, and sports clubs. Also emphasised are the industrial areas such as the docklands, sawmills, and railway yards.

In 1934 the construction of the extensive Singapore Naval Base was fully under way following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria three years prior. Defensive structures such as the mole protecting Telok Ayer Basin and Fort Canning are also included in the map.

The Federated Malay States Survey was established in Kuala Lumpur to accommodate the Survey Department of the British colonial administration in 1910. It was the first official survey organisation to publish detailed scientifically produced maps of the region which are still highly regarded for their quality.

Rare. Only two copies in institutions, in the Singapore National Library and the Library of Congress, not in BL.

Colour chromolithographed map, dissected into 16 segments and laid on linen, folding into original cloth boards, with an inset map of wharves west of Empire Dock, a couple small smudges, colours fine and bright, a little wear to cloth.
