Dodecanese.

The first edition of this work was issued in 1941, in response to the invasion of the Dodecanese Islands by Italy, ideally situated in the South-east Aegean Sea as a naval base. This second edition was issued shortly after the Italian surrender in 1943 in order to prepare British troops to repel the German Dodecanese Campaign. They failed: Germany had captured the majority of the islands in a matter of months, largely due to superior air presence, and held them until their surrender in 1945. The British failure to defend the islands was significant. Virtually the entire Jewish population of the islands, some 6,000, were deported to concentration camps and killed. The only Ladino-speaking Jews that survived were those that managed to escape to Turkey.

The Dodecanese became a British protectorate after the war, but almost immediately became part of Greece as part of the Italian peace treaty of 1947.
