Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910) chose a medical career early in life, but received only rejections from medical schools until 1847, when the student body of an institution in upstate New York voted to accept her as a joke, only for her to graduate top of the class in 1849. She then undertook further training in Paris before establishing a practice in New York that eventually became the New York Infirmary for Women, which trained and was run by women medics. Blackwell was also the first woman added to the British Medical Register in 1859, and was an important influence on Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who would become the second. She spent her later years in England, working as a consulting physician at Anderson's New Hospital for Women in Marylebone, and serving as a lecturer and council member for the London School of Medicine for Women.
