Venice, Antonio Calleoni (Bragadini), 1649
A single volume (out of four) of an exceedingly rare edition of the Hebrew Bible printed in Venice between the years 1648 and 1655. Printed by Antonio Calleoni, also known as Cayun, who was one of a several printers whose work was published at the illustrious Venetian press of the Bragadini family. The Bragadini Hebrew printing house, one of the most prominent of its time, was active in Venice for three centuries. Among the distinguishing features of Calleoni's editions is his characteristic printer's device, comprising three lions' heads in an oval frame, placed under the printer's surname (spelled CaLeoni or Calleoni).
In his title pages Calleoni cleverly placed the figures most closely associated with the specific volume. Moses and Aaron were depicted on the title page of his Pentateuch. In the following volume, Former Prophets presented here, Samuel and Elijah depicted on the title page. For the third section, the Latter Prophets, Isaiah and Jeremiah flank the title page and finally for the Hagiographa volume, David and Solomon are shown.
