A prolific translator of Persian literature, Gladwin's (d. circa 1813) patron was Warren Hastings. With a remarkable linguistic ability he became a Professor of Persian at Fort William College in Calcutta in 1800, having served in the Bengal Army. His translations were elegant and precise, and accompanied by the original Persian text, as here in this translation of Attar's Book of Wisdom, which he misattributes to Sa'di.Scarce.
