Hooker collected more than 7,000 specimens during his expedition, including twenty-five rhododendrons new to British science. The present is 'An important work both for the botanist and horticulturalist since it contains descriptions and plates of many of the best garden rhododendron species which can be grown in this country and an account of their discovery' (Great Flower Books).
First edition; Folio; 30 hand-coloured lithographed plates, some toning at the extreme edges of the plates but overall clean; contemporary green morocco rebacked with the original spine laid down, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, boards gilt panelled, marbled endpapers, gilt roll to turn-ins, all edges gilt, binding a little scuffed and bumped, corners repaired, a very good copy.
