The richly illustrated journal Ukrainske Mystetstvo [Ukrainian Art] was published by a collective of artists who lived mainly in displaced persons' camps in Germany and Austria. The journal was primarily aimed at promoting modern and contemporary Ukrainian artists but also includes articles on the nation's artistic traditions, including fresco paintings and mosaics. The first volume covers the art of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv and the second that of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, which had been demolished by the Soviet Union in 1934. The 11th and 12th century Byzantine mosaics which adorned the monastery were fortunately removed and relocated (although were seized by the Nazis and then went through American and Russian hands before finally returning to Kyiv in the 2000s).
First edition; 2 issues (all published for this year), 4to (32 x 23 cm); illustrated throughout with some in colour, text in Ukrainian with brief resumes in English, French and German and captions in all four languages; original printed wrappers, some minor water stains and age toning to wrappers otherwise a very good set.
