A very good first edition copy of this cautionary tale by J.B. Priestley, recounting the adventures & misadventures of Charlie Habble whose bravery in preventing an explosion at the Midlands factory where he works sees him turned into a hero in the national press, exposing him to media manipulation and the inevitable corrupting influence of London's nefarious metropolitan machinations, finally emerging intact but brutalised.

First edition, first printing; 8vo; publisher's blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine, a bright, sharp example, in superb pictorial dust-jacket, a few very small chips and closed tears including head of spine, but with almost no loss, spine slightly sunned with dulling to red colour, but overall a fine example.
