The scarce issue in cloth. Achter Glas is one of the most important examples of Dutch photographic or visual novels, which combined reality and fiction. Another example is Ed van der Elsken's Een Liefdesgesichiedenis in Saint Germain des Prés (Love on the Left Bank, 1956). Achter Glas was published the year after van der Keuken enrolled at the Institute des Hautes Études Cinématographiques in Paris. It is much more lyrical in its execution and layout than his first book, Wij zijn 17 (1955), which also looked at the transitional period between youth and adulthood. Van der Keuken was just 19 when he made this work, which has a narrative following two girls, Georgette and Yvonne, as they gaze out of windows, daydreaming about how they will spend their day.
