Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, first published in London in 1866, has not lost its charm and freshness for new generations of readers. Its author was the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898) who adopted the pen-name of 'Lewis Carroll'. His genius was of two distinct orders - the one making for mastery of detail, clarity of thought, and correctness of judgement; while the other side of his strange personality manifested a deep love for children and an uncanny power of entering into their minds and imagination.

Later edition (fifty-fifth thousand) 8vo (190 x 135 mm); half-title, 42 woodcut illustrations (including frontispiece), advertisement leaf at rear, the odd, light, minor mark but otherwise internally near-fine; publisher's red pictorial cloth by Burn, portrait of Alice in gilt to upper cover, portrait of the Cheshire Cat to lower cover, gilt edges, dark blue endpapers, extremities rubbed spine darkened, boards dust soiled and dulled but very sound and in all, a very good copy.
