A very good copy of Mary Mitford's classic study of rural customs, characters and scenery, originally published during the 1820s & '30s. The Cranford series edition is without question one of the most attractive editions, both as an example of the Cranford series and of the actual text; this copy additionally benefiting from the dust-jacket, in itself a remarkable survivor, and the resultant preservation of the cloth and gilt-blocking beneath.
Cranford edition. 8vo., lx, 256 pp., with 100 illustrations in text, of which many full-page with blank versos and one placed as a frontispiece; publisher's green cloth gilt, all edges gilt, printed dust-wrapper, minimal splitting to hinges, wrapper dust-stained and a little chipped, otherwise a very good copy.
