BRACEBRIDGE, Selina.
Stock Code 102521
London, Dalton, 1839
A fine panoramic view, entirely different from Mrs. Bracebridge's 1836 panorama. The present view is taken from a site directly opposite the Acropolis, near the church St. Demetrius the Bombardier. This panorama is far scarcer than Mrs. Bracebridge's earlier panorama which was taken from a position north of the Pnyx.
Selina Bracebridge was married to the Bracebridge celebrated in Washinton Irving's Bracebridge Hall. They lived three miles south of Athens in an area known as 'Carar'. She was a talented artist who had studied under Samuel Prout. In addition to her two panoramas of Athens, she also produced a panorama of Jerusalem and engravings of the Lebanon from sketches made during a tour of the Near East in 1833.
Lithographed panorama (30 x 272 cm) on three conjoined sheets, sketched from nature and on zinc by Mrs. Bracebridge, light foxing to joins, a fine example, never bound or trimmed, preserved in blue cloth foldover chemise, morocco label to upper cover, black ties.
Abbey (Life), 455; Blackmer 193; Weber 1128.
