1955
The Jacqueline Roque depicted in this early linocut shows a forceful personality, rather in contrast to the much sweeter linocut portraits of the 1960's. The American scholar and curator, William Rubin, considered this subject to be the most revealing portrait of Jacqueline across all media.
"The end of 1955 would witness Picasso's most penetrating image of Jacqueline, a linoleum print that plumbs her fragile equilibrium and her vulnerability to despair; foreshadowing the Jacqueline that one often covered in Mougins following the painter's death. No other portrait of Jacqueline in any medium so totally captures these tragic aspects of her nature..." (William Rubin, 'Picasso and Portraiture: Representation and Transformation', Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1996, p. 464.)
An extremely rare linocut printed in black, 1955, one of three proofs on 'offset fort' paper, stamped in ink verso 'Imprimerie Arnéra Archives / Non Signé', inscribed by the printer, Hidalgo Arnéra '28.12.1955. Jacqueline au Foulard. Epreuve d'essai noir sur fond blanc. Sans suite' in pencil, 67 x 50.2 cm. (26½ x 19¾ in.)
