London, Stanford's Geographical Establishment, 1902.
The map shows the holdings of the European countries including the Congo Free State, in 1902 still personally owned by King Leopold II, the height of the German colonies including Abyssinia, Cameroon, Togo, Namibia, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and still shows Egypt as controlled by 'Turkish and Egyption' forces under Mohamed Tewfik Pasha which would soon be turned into the Sultanate of Egypt.
The other British controlled areas are specifically delineated, with British controlled cities underlined in red and further territories such as Socotra, the Aden Protectorate, Cyprus, and Bahrain also highlighted.
Apart from rivers and state borders the only other features depicted are the railways, both present and projected, and telegraph lines, both subterranean and submarine, showing the emphasis on the economic promise of Africa and the necessary infrastructure to realise it.
Very large (160 x 172 cm). coloured lithograph map, dissected into 80 segments and mounted on linen in four sections, each folding into original black morocco case, colouring fine and fresh, a little wear to the morocco case.
