In 1949, New Statesman challenged its readers to parody the style of any novelist named Green or Greene. Under a pseudonym, Graham Greene submitted a parody of himself. He came in second.In 1962 Greene again entered a similar New Statesman competition pseudonymously, once again failing to claim first prize. This book bears a full page of Greene's notes to win the 1965 New Statesman parody competition, which he failed to win on his third attempt, but did earn him an honourable mention.
First edition, first impression, Graham Greene's copy, with his ownership signature to the verso of the front free endpaper and a full page of notes on the verso of the rear flyleaf; 8vo; b&w illustrations; publisher's red cloth, silver lettering to spine, top edge of front cover bumped, with the price-clipped pictorial dustjacket by T. A. Greeves, spine panel tanned, a couple of nicks to extremities with associated creasing; an excellent copy.
