Rare grammar of Gujarati, produced almost entirely as a lithograph copy of the manuscript original, produced at the advent of language printing in India. The work was compiled in 1814, six years before the first Gujarati bible printed in Serampore and preceded only by the grammar of Robert Drummond in 1808, as an early attempt at an educational document for learning the language and applying it in official use.

The author, of which there is little information, is lucky that his brother, one James Forbes, endeavoured to publish his brother's manuscript fifteen years after the author's death.

The text is divided into 6 sections as follows: (I) Grammar of the Goojratee Language; (II) The Book of Advice as taught in the Schools in Goojrat; (III) Being a Collection of Familiar Dialogues and Phrases...; (IV) The Histories contained in this part are translated form the English (here inserted) of Gladwine's Moon-shee, London Edit 1801; (V) Comprises Translations of the Stories contained in the 1st volume of Gilchirsts Hindee Story Teller, Calcutta Edition, 1802; (VI) Presedents on Forms of Writings used in Courts of Justice, by Merchants... with the practical system of Bookkeeping in use in Goojrat.

Rare, only 3 UK institutional copies (BL, RAS, Oxford) and 4 others worldwide (not in the Library of Congress).

First Edition; 4to (25 x 20.5 cm), lithographed throughout in English and Gujarati, with some small comparative sections in Arabic and Persian, early ink inscription to title and front free endpaper, leaves evenly age-toned, a few very small closed marginal tears; modern quarter cloth over marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine, a very good copy.
