The scarce first edition of Bell's scarce account of her five-month journey along the Euphrates, well illustrated with original photographs. This was her first journey into Iraq and the start of her lifelong association with the country and its independence. She visited the Hittite city of Carchemish, where she consulted with the two archaeologists on site, T.E. Lawrence and Reginald Campbell Thompson, photographed the relief carvings in Halamata Cave, mapped and described the ruin of Ukhaidir, and travelled on to Babylon and Najaf.

First edition; 8vo (22.5 x 15.5 cm); frontispiece and 235 illustrations, large folding map at end; publisher's original tan cloth, title and decorative vigentte in black to upper board, spine lettered in gilt, fore and bottom-edges uncut, one small nick to spine head, a very good copy; xvii, 370 pp.

Robinson, pp4-5.
