First edition of this significant catalogue of Isotype pictograms by one of their original designers, Gerd Arntz (1900-1988).

Developed in the 1920s by Marie and Otto Neurath and Arntz, Isotype was a simplified visual method for conveying complex information. It 'helped establish some of the core principles of graphic design' and its legacy 'can be seen everywhere from newspapers and textbooks to signage, transit maps, interfaces, and emojis' (Inglis, 'Meet Marie Neurath', AIGA Eye on Design, September 17, 2019). Arntz, a woodcut artist and founder of the Cologne Progressives movement, worked with Otto Neurath at the Museum for Social and Economic Afairs, and designed over 4,000 individual pictograms for Isotype.

134 page catalogue; colour printed, two small spots to the title; loosely bound in ring binder with black cloth backstrip and black and grey marble-patterned sides, printed paper labels to the spine and cover, housed in the original carboard box which is partially tanned; excellent condition.
