dr. strangelove's doomsday machine
First edition, first printing of the work that inspired the character Dr. Strangelove. An unusually nice copy in the dust jacket.Herman Kahn (1922-1983), the most prominent Cold War nuclear strategist, briefly worked on the development of the hydrogen bomb, but was primarily a mathematician at the RAND Corporation. He was particularly interested in the application of mathematical game theory to nuclear strategy, arguing in this best-selling book that a nuclear war was potentially winnable, and that the US should invest heavily in civil defense and second strike capability as deterrents. It was here that he presented his most notorious concept, the 'Doomsday Machine' that would automatically set off enough weapons to destroy the world should the Soviet Union attack the US and disable command and control.
First edition, first printing; 8vo; charts in the text; original red cloth, titles to spine gilt with black bars, an excellent copy in the jacket that is a little rubbed at the extremities with minor chipping and creasing at the ends of the spine panel, which is toned; 651pp.
