Enlarged second edition of 'the first textbook on radioactivity' by Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937), the physicist who both discovered the structure of the atom and was the first to split one (Dibner, One Hundred Books Famous in Science 51).'Research progressed so rapidly in this area that the second edition, published only a year later, had to be enlarged by fifty percent. The book includes a discussion of Rutherford's revolutionary transformation theory, developed during the period 1902-1903, which states that radioactivity is a by-product of the transformation of one element into another' (The Norman Library of Science and Medicine 1870).
Second edition; 8vo; 1 plate, contemporary ownership signature in ink to the front free endpaper, contents toned; original green cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, cloth a little rubbed with some faint markings, corners bumped, a very good copy; 580pp.
