A satirical work on the composition of paintings, specifically for book engravings, with Alken poking fun at his own style and ability.

First edition; large 8vo (28.5 x 20); 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates, each accompanied by a page of text, lacks half-title, armorial bookplate to pastedown, discreet booksellers ticket to pastedown, a little offsetting; later calf-backed cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt, edges untrimmed, a very good copy.
