This is the first time Trollope based a novel on psychological analysis rather than a study of social manners. It is a tale of the gradual falling into madness of a suspicious husband and although it has the usual Trollopian elements, e.g. a subplot revolving around the Cathedral Close of Exeter, the pathological study of Trevelyan is the book's main theme and its importance in the chronology of Trollope's work.
