Presentation copy. A 'superbly illustrated' scientific work, containing an account of the first Swiss expedition to the Kumaon Himalayas led by the authors. Though the object of the expedition was chiefly geological, the two men still managed to climb several high summits on the Nepal-Tibet border.

This copy was presented to Norman Dyhrenfurth, a swiss born mountaineer, who led the first American expedition to climb Everest in 1963.

First edition. 8vo (24 x 17 cms), pp.270, one loose folding coloured map attached at rear, 2 folding panoramas, 220 photographic illustrations, numerous illustrations in text, bookplate and signature of Professor Dyhrenfurth on front pastedown, presentation and signature by both authors on front free endpaper, publisher's grey cloth, title printed on spine and upper cover; a mint copy.
