Egypt
The Temple of Isis, built between 380 and 362 BC, was part of the Philae temple complex near the First Cataract of the Nile. Following the building of the Aswan Low Dam by the British, Philae was regularly flooded and with the raising of the height of the dam the island was flooded year round, except for the months when the dam's sluices were opened. As a result beginning in 1960 UNESCO began a programme to save the temple complex and move the monuments to the nearby island Agilkia which was safe from flooding.Antonio Beato (1832-1906) was one of Egypt's most prolific photographers. Unlike his brother Felice Beato who travelled widely, Antonio remained in Egypt for most of his professional life.
Albumen print; very good tonal range and in good condition; numbered and tilted in French in pencil to reverse.
